Ever wanted to try saging but didn’t know where to start? Saging, or "smudging," is a simple yet powerful ritual used to cleanse spaces, people, or objects of negative energy and invite positive energy in. It’s a great way to reset and refresh your environment with intention and mindfulness.
Benefits of Saging
Saging helps clear stagnant or negative energy, making your space feel lighter and more positive. It can also promote relaxation, improve focus, and support mental clarity, making it a great practice for welcoming new beginnings or creating a calm environment.
Here's how:
Set an Intention
Before you begin, think about what you want to achieve with the saging (e.g., clearing negative energy, inviting positivity, or resetting your space). Hold that intention in your mind.
Gather Supplies
Sage bundle (also known as a smudge stick)
A heat-proof dish, bowl, or shell to catch ashes
A lighter or match
A feather or other item to push smoke away from you
Open a Window or Door
This is to ensure any negative energy or smoke can leave the space.
Light the Sage
Hold the sage bundle at a 45-degree angle and light the end using a match or lighter until it begins to smoke (it should smolder, not burn with an open flame).
Gently blow out any flames so that the sage is producing a steady stream of smoke.
Walk Around Your Space
Hold the sage bundle over your dish to catch any falling ash.
Start at the entrance of the room and move clockwise around the space. Use slow, sweeping motions to spread the smoke into every corner, over doorways, and around windows.
You can say your intention out loud or silently as you move through the space (e.g., “I cleanse this space of negativity and invite in light and positivity”).
Ensure you are pushing the smoke away from you as you walk around the space
Smudge Yourself (Optional)
You can gently waft the smoke around yourself, starting from your head and moving downward, to cleanse your own energy. Again pushing smoke away from you
Extinguish the Sage
Once you feel you have saged enough, gently press the smoldering end of the sage into the dish until it stops smoking.
Make sure it is completely extinguished before leaving it unattended.
Close the Ritual
Close the window or door once the space feels refreshed, and take a moment to appreciate the new energy in your space.
Enjoy the positive energy!
